âClyde!â Ashley yelled from across the room and dashed toward him.
He grinned, loving the way she said his name, loving sheâd come close, loving more the smile brightening her face.
âJakeâs going to let me see him turn. Isnât that awesome? I canâtââ
His heart dropped, smile faded. He didnât think, just decided, âNo.â
Ashley took a step back. Simultaneously, Jenna smacked him across his shoulder.
He couldnât blame her. The way heâd said that, how heâd sounded, heâd been too angry, no, infuriated.
âOh boy, Ash. Get ready.â Jocelyn said, her voice coming from beside them where she stood, her sidetucked against Landon.
Clyde hadnât noticed when Jocelyn joined the conversation either. Seems he didnât have it in him to pay too much attention to anything other than Ashley. His every thought, action, everything focused on Ashley, right then on making her understand why she had to listen to him.
âItâs dangerous. You canât be nearâ¦â Jacob. Damn that demon.âIâll kill him.â Hestalked toward Jacob.
âClyde, donât,â Ashley pleaded.
Jacob materialized a foot away and smirked. âIs there a problem, angel?â
He hardened his jaw. âYou arenât turning anywhere near her.â
âClyde, please, donâtââ Ashley said, now standing beside him.
Jacob unleashed his anger, letting it circle them. âItâs up to her.â
He narrowed his eyes to slits. âDo you have a problem listening? I said no.â
âBut I wantââ
He faced her. âItâs dangerous. Iâm not having you around turned demons, ever, especially him.â
Her face fell, and her eyes pleaded, âBut Jenna and Joceââ
Without losing her gaze, he jerked his head side to side. âI donât care.â
She widened her eyes a split second before she narrowed them and snapped, âYou canât tell me what to do.â Cheeks flushing, she squared her shoulders. âIâm an adult, and this is between Jake and me.â She then turned and stormed off.
He stayed there, dumbfounded, staring at where sheâd been until Landon spoke.
âI thought you said she never got angry.â
âSheâs related to me.â Jocelyn grinned. âOf course, she gets angry.â
âCome on, Clyde.â Jenna rolled her eyes. âYou know better than to try to control an Elemental.â
He narrowed his eyes at her then sliced his glare to Jocelyn. âSheâs been spending too much time with these two.â
Jenna shrugged. âYeah, whatever. Believe what you want, but no woman likes it when a man tells her what she can and canât do.â
Lucas wrapped an arm around Jennaâs waist and hauled her until heâd pressed her front to his side. âYou better fix it, quick. The longer you let her stew, the worse itâll be.â
Right. Not wasting a second, he materialized near the elevators, inches from her. âAngel, pleaseââ
She crossed her arms over her chest. âIâm mad. You arenât allowed to call me that when Iâm mad.â
âWhy?â
âBecauseâ¦â She bit her bottom lip and dropped her arms to her sides. âI can take care of myself. Besides, Jakeâs not going to hurt me.â
He shut his eyes, fighting to ignore the flare of jealousy that knotted his gut every time she said the demonâs name. âHis nameâs Jacob.â
âHe doesnât care that I call him Jake.â
She didnât have to tell him something he knew. Clamping his jaw tightly, he admitted, âI donât like it.â
âWhy?â
Didnât she see? Furious, he blurted, âBecause itâs a step away from an endearment and you havenât given me one.â
She stilled. Her eyes widened and a split second later softened. âOhâ¦â
He parted his mouth, intent on saying something, anything, but before he managed it she got on the tips of her toes, leaned into him, and pressed her lips to his. Instantly, he wrapped an arm around her waist, cupped the back of her head with the other, and dove into her mouth, deepening the kiss.
Magnificent.
